More children are getting leprosy than youngsters, do not ignore these symptoms even after forgetting them

Dr. Kuldeep Jain, Consultant at KJIVF, Delhi, says that leprosy is also called 'neglected disease'. It is one of the most deadly diseases due to its symptoms. In this, the size of body parts starts deteriorating.

Medical experts say that children are more prone to leprosy than adults , so children should always be kept away from the person infected with this disease. Leprosy is one of the oldest diseases. It is also called Henson's disease and is caused by the slow-growing bacteria Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae). Symptoms take 3-5 years after exposure to bacteria. This period is called the incubation period (incubation period).

He said that the effect of the symptoms of the disease is seen on the skin, nerves, mucous membrane (moist and wet parts of the open body).

Symptoms of leprosy
  • Large, strange-colored wound or scar on the chest.
  • Light colored spots on the skin, which look flattened and faded, make the skin numb at this place.
  • Dryness, stiffness and thick skin in the skin.
  • A wound on the soles of the feet that does not have pain.
  • Lumps or swelling around the face or ear, with no pain.
  • Eyebrows or eyelids fall.
  • Numbness of the affected parts of the skin.
  • Muscle weakness or paralysis (especially in hands and feet).
  • Eye problems that can lead to blindness.
  • Paralysis or crippling of hands and feet.
  • Shortening of the fingers of the feet.
  • Nose size worsens.

He told that complete treatment of leprosy is possible. 95% of the population of the world has the strength to fight diseases so strong that even after being in contact for a long time, they do not become a victim of the disease. Due to the stigma and misconceptions associated with leprosy, many times people hide its symptoms, due to which the condition of the patient worsens. It also increases the risk of spreading the disease in the community.

The World Health Organization provides free treatment for leprosy. He told that in case of leprosy, keep these things in mind-
  • The best way to prevent the spread of leprosy is by diagnosing and treating it as soon as possible.
  • Do not stay in contact with untreated, infected person for a long time.
  • Monitoring of symptoms and attention to serious cases.
  • Avoid injury and keep the wound clean.
  • Children are more prone to leprosy than adults so always keep children away from infected person.
